Choose the way you want to get in before choosing every feature on the box.

THE PARTS / THE PURPOSE

A code for someone arriving later can be useful. So can leaving the everyday key at home. Neither means your door needs every connected feature available. The first questions are how the door works now and who will manage the new way in.

LockReach handles smart lock installation requests in Jersey City where the hardware and door are suitable. Product compatibility, the building's arrangements and the requested functions need to be checked before a device or installation is accepted.

The door still has to close properly

A motor doesn't remove a bolt's need to line up with the frame. If the current lock catches unless you lift or pull the door, mention that before planning a keypad. A door and lock assessment may be needed first.

Door thickness, existing openings, trim and the type of lock all affect the fit. A product designed for one deadbolt arrangement may not suit an older mortise door. Keep the product details available if you've already bought it; a similar-looking installation in a photograph isn't enough to confirm compatibility.

Codes need someone to look after them

Decide who will add a code, remove an old one and respond when a battery warning appears. A temporary visitor, a household member and a person managing several units may need different arrangements. The useful choice is the one someone can maintain.

Some functions depend on an app, an account, a hub or a network connection. Check those requirements for the exact product and the features you intend to use. Installation of the lock doesn't automatically include an ongoing account or a building-wide access service.

Keep a backup that fits the actual lock

Ask how entry works if the batteries are low or a connected feature is unavailable. The answer varies by product. If a mechanical key is provided, keep a usable copy somewhere you can reach; leaving every backup inside defeats its purpose.

Think about the people using the door as well. Buttons, reach, grip and the inside thumbturn should feel manageable in everyday use. The home lock guide discusses those practical choices without assuming that a keypad is always the best answer.

Your own door and the building entrance are separate decisions

For a rented apartment or a shared building, establish permission before altering hardware. A management-issued fob is not the same product as a keypad fitted to a unit door. We don't assume a locksmith installation can add credentials to a building's managed system.

Where the work is suitable and agreed, test the everyday code, the inside operation and the backup method included with the installation. Have the settings and responsibilities explained in plain terms. Our building key guide helps identify which access request belongs with management.

Settle the small handover details

Know who controls any account, how codes are changed and which parts of the setup were included in the work. Keep the product information and receipt. There is no need to share a private access code in a general enquiry.

A couple of useful questions

Can a smart lock go on any apartment door?

No. The door preparation, existing lock, product requirements and building permission all need checking. An older mortise setup may need a different approach from a standard deadbolt.

Does installing a keypad replace a building fob?

No. A unit-door keypad and a management-controlled building credential are separate systems. Ask the building administrator about shared-entry credentials.

stopped working?
